How We Research
Updated: 2 Nov 2026Last verified: 2 Nov 2026
Trailarly publishes research-only comparisons. This page explains what that means and exactly what we do and do not do before we publish a guide or a review.
What "research-only" means
We compare published specs, price tiers and real owner reviews. We read the maker's own product page, spec sheet or manual for every item we cover. We note the maker list price on our check date and turn it into a price tier. We read owner reviews on Amazon, on the maker's site and on outdoor forums, and we summarise the recurring themes in our own words.
We do not run our own product tests. We do not take gear on a trail ourselves and report back on how it performed. When a page says "Researched comparison," that is the method behind it, and it is the only method we use.
Our step-by-step process
- We shortlist models that are currently sold, confirming each one is still listed on Amazon US before we write about it. If a model has been discontinued or replaced, we switch to the current model and note the change on the page.
- We pull specs such as weight, packed size, R-value, capacity, boil time or battery life from the maker's own page or manual, not from a marketplace listing.
- We give each pick a price tier (Budget, Mid-range or Premium) based on the maker list price on our check date, and we date that check. We never publish a fixed Amazon price, because Amazon prices move too often to stay accurate on a static page.
- We read a spread of owner reviews across more than one source and summarise the common praise and the common complaints in plain language, without quoting or copying review text.
- We write pros, cons and a plain verdict for each item, including who should skip it, based on the specs and the review themes we gathered.
What we never do
We never claim to have tested a product ourselves. We never copy text from an Amazon review. We never post a star rating, because we have no first-party rating data of our own. We never post a numeric score on these pages.
Keeping pages current
Each guide and review carries a "Last verified" date near the top. We recheck prices, model availability and specs on a set schedule, and sooner if we learn a model has been discontinued. When we update a page, we add a short note in its change log.
Sources we rely on
Maker product pages, maker manuals and spec sheets, published industry standards such as ASTM F3340 for sleeping pad insulation where a maker states it, and owner reviews posted on Amazon, on maker sites and on outdoor forums. We link the sources we used at the bottom of each page.
Corrections
If you spot an outdated price, a discontinued model or a factual error, tell us through our contact page. We correct the page and note the fix in its change log.
